I believe that the current education system's leaning towards academic achievement means that children with more practical skills are not reaching their potential. In the past, pupils with high practical skills and manual dexeterity were guided towards careers in plumbing, carpentry, building, car maintenance, hairdressing, tailoring, etc. Their abilities were recognised in equal measure with their academic counterparts. Pupils who find it impossible to keep up with the academic requirement often become awkward and disruptive. We all want to achieve our aims and would doubtless become frustrated if constantly faced with tasks beyond our understanding. |
